I woke on Monday morning with this old hymn going through my heart. The old chorus goes; On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand. What an amazing revelation by the composer Edward Mote who wrote the original hymn back in 1837.

He was an ordinary man, born in 1797, the son of Pub owners who knew nothing of God until he was in his mid 30's. A cabinet maker for 37 years he finally trained and became a minister of the Gospel at age 55.

What a transformation for this man, having done life the hard way to come to the realisation that the only thing that was not going to sink beneath him or let him down was Jesus Christ. This HOPE, this revelation transformed his life.

1 Peter 1:3 says 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.'

A LIVING HOPE! What does that mean? A Hope that never fails, a hope that continues to be a reinvigorating influence in your life.

Is your hope just a temporal thing? We all have temporal hopes! Hopes that say if we work hard we might see (with some luck) our dreams our hopes realised. Temporal (natural) hopes are based on our current life history and our environmental surroundings. If you live in a 1st world country you hope for: A better job, a nicer house, good health, perhaps a great family and good friends. If you live in a 3rd world country your hopes might consist of regular meals, or a permanent roof over your head, perhaps a good season for your crops if you happen to work on a shared farm. These hopes are important for our lives, but we have no control over them, they are little more than a wish list that may happen if everything goes our way and we work hard.

The Hope of the one who believes in Jesus Christ is different, it is a living hope, based on the promises of God. It is hope that promises strength to your heart and soul in times of stress.

  • MY HOPE tells me that I have a living Saviour - the great shepherd of my soul - Jesus

  • MY HOPE tells me Jesus lives within those who trust Him and live according to His will and purpose.

  • MY HOPE HAS GREAT CONFIDENCE that Jesus is coming again soon. This transient life will cease but the believer is a pilgrim on a journey whose ultimate goal is heaven.

  • MY HOPE tells me because I'm in relationship with Jesus, the great shepherd, I will rule and reign with Him, not just in the future but now in this life.

  • MY HOPE tells me, even when I struggle now and don't know how to pray or connect with God, He is always there, listening, if we will simply call on Him .

  • MY HOPE tells me God has a purpose, even for my problems; that He is at work on behalf of those who trust in Him and live in obedience to His word. Romans 8:26 says 'We know that in ALL things God is at work for the good of those who love Him. Those who have been called because it was His plan (saved in keeping with His plan).'

And before you question whether it's God's plan to save you, the Bible teaches us that it is God's will that NO ONE will perish, but that everyone will come to believing faith in Jesus Christ.

God will always use the circumstances we find ourselves in to teach us, to help us grow, to strengthen us and to equip us for His purpose and future. We have a LIVING HOPE, not based on temporary things but on that which is eternal. Faith in Jesus Christ is our access into the presence of God the creator of the universe. He has given His very best for you, will you give your best to Him?
